Sunday July 20th
Black Ships Festival, Newport
Various venues. A celebration of the arts and culture of Japan, commemorating the historic achievements of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, USN, of Newport, who negotiated the first treaty between Japan and the United States. Demonstrations and workshops include origami, sushi-making, martial arts, Taiko drumming, and traditional Japanese tea ceremony. www.newportevents.com

2014 Rhode Island Colombian Day Festival and Parade, Pawtucket
Slater Mill Historic Site grounds, Roosevelt Avenue. Parade steps off at 10am from 934 Dexter Street in Central Falls, and travels along Golf Avenue to Exchange Street to Roosevelt Avenue in Pawtucket. Festival from noon to 7pmwww.colcultura.com
